For a mod to work, your server and launcher must use the same Minecraft version, the same loader and compatible mods. This guide takes you through each step, even if it is your first time.
You can upload files to the folder mods/, but they will only load if the server uses a compatible loader such as Forge, Fabric, NeoForge or Quilt.
A Minecraft mod is not simply a file uploaded to the server. For it to work, the server must be prepared and players must launch Minecraft with the correct profile.

Use Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, Quilt or another compatible loader. That loader is what allows the mods to load.
They are installed on the player computer. Some change graphics, interface or performance.
They are installed on the server. Some mods must be on the server and also in the launcher.
Follow this order to avoid errors. If a step does not match, the server will usually fail to load or the player will be unable to join.

Most mod issues come from incompatibility between server, launcher and files.
| Item | What to check | Clear example |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft version | Server and launcher must use the same version. | 1.20.1 with 1.20.1. |
| Loader | Forge, Fabric, NeoForge and Quilt are not the same. | A Fabric mod does not work on Forge unless the mod says so. |
| Mod version | The mod file must be compatible with your version. | A mod for 1.21 may fail on 1.20.1. |
| Dependencies | Some mods need other mods to work. | If a library is missing, the server may not start. |
| Correct side | There are client, server or both-side mods. | If it is required on both sides, it must be on the server and launcher. |
Use the panel as your management area. You do not need to run commands: open the service and work from the files section.
mods/..jar compatible. If the server uses mods, you should normally not start Minecraft with the standard profile. Start it with the correct loader profile.
Install the loader you need and select that profile before playing.
If you use a modpack, all players must use the same modpack version.
1.20.1 with Forge, your launcher must start Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge. If you join with Vanilla, it will not work.
It is normal to confuse them. The difference matters because they are installed and work differently.
They require loaders such as Forge, Fabric, NeoForge or Quilt. Many mods must also be installed on the player's computer.
They are used on servers such as Paper, Spigot or Purpur. Players normally do not install anything on their computers.
When a modded server fails, the most useful first step is to review the latest change. The problem is usually an incompatible version, a missing dependency or a mod installed on the wrong side.
You can upload files, but Vanilla will not run them. To play with actual mods, you need a server with a compatible loader.
It depends on the mod. Some are server-only, others client-only, and many must be on both sides.
Not as a general rule. Use the loader specified by the mod or modpack.
Remove the last added mod, restart and check whether a dependency is missing or the mod is for another version.
Enter your client area, open your Minecraft server and use the files section.
